It’s summer time for most everyone by now and there’s a change in the air. Summer school is in swing (nothing like hitting the books while laying out by the pool) and the weather is getting into the triple digits—at least if you’re in Southern California. But there’s one part of summer that I’m absolutely craving—and no it’s not a Big Stick. Although, darn, that sounds pretty swell too in this sweltering heat.
I miss my friends. What a joy it was to walk down the hall and have my best friend right there or to have my lovely roommate sitting right below me in our bunk bed designed for ten-year-old twin sisters. Now that it’s summer, I no longer have that luxury. All I have is my cat (as much as I love that little thing—but I’m not 65) and my parents who fall asleep before Jeopardy even comes on. Okay, that was a gross exaggeration but 10:00 pm is their max!
So you can imagine how happy I was when my little twin of a roommate gave me a call today. I wasn’t able to chat with her at that time but I can’t wait to catch up real soon. We have so many resources today—Skype, Facebook, IM (do people still use that?), and email. Hey, there’s even a thing called the telephone and mail if you’re really getting ancient. I’m always done for a touch of Austen tradition. Any moment that cultivates my penmanship is a moment well spent!
Here is my Sunny Suggestion for the day: give your friend a “jingle jangle” today, as I like to call it. Shoot them a text, give them a call, leave them a Facebook comment—something to let them know that you’re thinking about them. And pick one special person. If you “make the rounds” people might pick up on it and they won’t feel nearly as special. Don’t be a solicitor friend that stops by every now and asks for a friend donation when you’re low on friend donations. Fill up your friend tank before you run empty!
Make the call.
