Summer Experiment to a Close

Well my “summer experiment” is coming to a close. There are only three more days left until my boyfriend returns from his study abroad in Cambridge, England. It has been an interesting experience to say the least but a learning process all the same. Thankfully I’ve been busy all summer with my internship and the editing of my book. This has been a blessing because he barely had time to talk, especially with the eight hour time distance.

I was tested the two sayings, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder” and “Out of sight, out of mind.” In my personal experience, I have found NEITHER to be true. I wouldn’t say that my heart “grew fonder” because in fact, I started to forget so many things about our relationship. Even in two months, you can start to lose the little mannerisms of people, no matter how close you were. And quite frankly, my heart grew a bit more resentful because it was so hard to communicate. In all of the nine weeks we were apart, we only skyped about once a week so it was hard to stay in touch.

In terms of the saying “out of sight, out of mind,” well, even though I didn’t always like the thoughts on my mind, they were still there. If anything, I had more thoughts on my mind than ever before. I won’t sugarcoat the process and tell you it was easy. Thankfully my situation was temporary and it depends on the two people involved. No matter what the relationship is like though, I think it is a tremendous learning experience as a couple and as individual people. In a sense I think I gained so much more independence through this process. I realized how valuable my time was and how much my relationship meant to me. I believe it happened for the best—my hope is that when he returns this Saturday, it will only make our time together all the more special. We’ll see!

Here’s to happy reunions.

Keep shining,

  1. Me says:

Thanks for posting, I am about to leave for a 4-month study abroad trip and my boyfriend is staying behind. We are going to stay together. I know it will be hard and I’m not looking forward to that part, but I am excited for writing letters, sending gifts, and skyping. I hope it all works out 🙂
