I learn a lot of things on my walks along Hilgard Avenue. The number one lesson: being friendly does wonders. I love the people who will say hello to you even if you haven’t talked to them in months or even a year but then there are the people who you met the night before who won’t even acknowledge you the next day. So giving a smile—it’s the best thing you can do. Truly, what do you have to lose? People don’t spit back to smiles. They usually return them.
I don’t know if you ever experience this but sometimes it’s harder than it should be to say hello. Whether I’m at work, on campus, or just out and about, sometimes in that split second that you have to make the choice I’ll admit, I don’t always make the right decision and I always regret it. Always. So I hope you’ll join me in having a “shotgun smile.” It goes off every time you see someone. No matter what.
I’d love to write more today but it’s time for me to smile with my friends—we’re going out to breakfast! Share your smile with as many people you see, whether they’re a stranger or a best friend. Everyone deserves a smile.
